Two weeks ago I was in Austin for WebexOne 2026, where Cisco talked up agents, MCP servers and AI admin controls. This week Zoom held Zoomtopia online on 20 and 21 October, with an in-person day in New York, and announced much of the same. The difference was that a lot of Zoom's announcements, and some of what it told investors, were aimed at organisations that already run Microsoft Teams.
In this week's roundup I look at Zoom's plans for those Teams estates, the targets it set at its investor session and its new AI governance controls, plus my take on AI voice and video editing in meetings. I've also picked out news from Otter.ai, WhatsApp and Owl Labs.
Editor's Pick: Zoom's Unified Context Layer Heads for Copilot and Teams Rooms
Zoom's main announcement was the Unified Context Layer, which links conversation history from meetings, phone, chat and the contact centre with documents and data from connected third-party systems. My Notes and ZoomMate draw on it, including ZoomMate Agent Teams, a multi-agent feature that went live on launch day. Founder and CEO Eric Yuan explained the reasoning in the launch announcement:
AI models are only as powerful as their understanding of your business.
“Fragmented product experiences isolate conversations, stall decisions, and drag businesses down. Today, with the Unified Context Layer, we’re laying the groundwork for a system of action designed to turn conversations into completed work.”
Zoom is also letting other AI assistants read that context. Its Search and Ask APIs, available now, let Microsoft 365 Copilot, Claude, GPT, Codex, Gemini and Slackbot query it directly, and the developer platform update adds MCP servers across Zoom's products, with an admin MCP server due this month. Zoom also confirmed that Zoom Rooms will be able to join Teams meetings in the first half of 2027, with HDMI sharing, dual displays, 1080p video, rosters and read-only chat. Its sensitivity labels already sync with Microsoft Purview for some customers.
Yuan told investors at the Zoomtopia session that Zoom can sell Meetings directly to sales teams in organisations that have standardised on another platform. Zoom has been building out its sales tools since it bought Common Room in July, and GM Linda Lian told UC Today last month that most sales teams run too many separate tools to get much out of AI:
What we call this Frankenstack of revenue tooling is really not prime for the AI era at all.
The context APIs fit that approach. A sales team could use Zoom, with My Notes Workflows sending meeting summaries into Salesforce, while the rest of the company reads those meeting records through Copilot. IT would then be managing two vendors' permission models over the same data, and Zoom's admin controls for this roll out between now and early 2027.
Zoom Sets Its First 2030 Targets as Enterprise Tops 62% of Revenue
Zoom also held an investor session at Zoomtopia and gave dated long-term guidance for the first time. It is targeting 6 to 8 percent revenue growth in fiscal 2030, double-digit enterprise growth and a non-GAAP operating margin of around 40 percent, up from its previous 33 to 36 percent target. CFO Michelle Chang said enterprise revenue grew 7.5 percent in the latest quarter, its fastest rate in three years, and now accounts for more than 62 percent of the business, up from 58 percent four years ago. Enterprise growth also hit a three-year high in Zoom's Q2 FY27 results in August.
Zoom also shared how far its other products have spread among its enterprise Meetings customers. Zoom Phone is in 29 percent of those accounts, Webinars in 27 percent and Rooms in 17 percent, and about a third of Phone deals now come from new customers. Brandeis University is one customer that has moved its phones onto Zoom. Eli Jacobson's team took over telephony from the network group as part of the switch, and he told UC Today it was easier than expected:
Managing a whole telephony system is not as scary as one might think when it's all there under one single umbrella.
Rooms has the lowest uptake of the three, and Zoom's recent announcements target it. Native Zoom Rooms now run on Cisco hardware, and Teams interoperability follows next year, so customers can add Zoom to rooms without replacing the equipment already there. Zoom also said customers using three or more of its products have 43 percent lower dollar churn, and that My Notes has about 1.5 million monthly active users.
Zoom Builds AI Governance Controls Around In-Room Capture
My Notes is coming to in-person meetings through devices from DTEN in November and Bota in Q1 2027. Chief Sales Officer Graeme Geddes told investors that customers increasingly want Zoom to capture, transcribe and assign actions from discussions in physical rooms. Alongside this, Zoom announced new AI management and security controls.
