2. HTC Thinks Privacy Could Make Smart Glasses Work

Smart glasses have an obvious enterprise pitch: hands-free assistance, live translation, visual guidance and remote expertise for workers in the field. Their less obvious feature is the person standing next to the wearer, wondering whether they are being filmed.

HTC has attempted to address that concern with its VIVE Eagle AI glasses, which launched in the US this month. The glasses offer visual queries, translation, AI-generated notes and open-ear audio. More importantly, someone nearby can say “stop recording” to end an active recording.

The hardware also stops recording when removed and disables the camera if the recording indicator is covered. HTC says media is encrypted, user data is not used for AI training and customers can use supported AI services without supplying identifying information.

“Our glasses aren’t designed for data mining - they’re designed to protect and respect the privacy of the wearer and the people around them.”

What This Means for Enterprise Buyers

Policies are useful, but visible and enforceable product safeguards are more useful when a camera enters a shared space. For organisations evaluating wearables in retail, manufacturing, healthcare or field service, privacy controls may become as important as battery life and AI features.

HTC is hardly going to solve the broader smart-glasses trust issue with one voice command. But it is treating privacy as a capability, not a disclaimer. That is a much better starting point.

3. The Collaboration Office Has a Noise Problem

Technology companies are not abandoning the office. They are reshaping it around collaboration, innovation and specialised work.

CBRE’s latest Office Occupier Sentiment Survey found that 89% of office-using organisations now require at least three in-office days each week, up from 78% a year earlier. It also found that 64% of technology companies plan to grow their office footprint, the highest proportion of any industry surveyed.

Yet only 14% of companies are making major improvements to their space.

John Morris, Group President of Advisory Leasing, Americas at CBRE, said:

“The market has shifted from whether the office matters to whether it delivers.”

That is a useful distinction. Requiring people to return to the office is straightforward. Creating a workplace that makes collaboration worthwhile is the harder bit.

The Missing Infrastructure: Sound

A recent analysis from sound-masking specialist Soft dB argues that modern tech offices are increasingly designed as a mix of collaboration hubs, engineering neighbourhoods, labs and demonstration spaces - without enough consideration of acoustics and speech privacy.

The issue is not simply that open offices are loud. Research cited by Soft dB points to intelligible speech as the more damaging factor: employees can hear and understand conversations they are not involved in, which makes it harder to focus.

That presents a practical workspace-tech problem. As organisations introduce more collaboration zones, occupancy systems and flexible layouts, they also need acoustic zoning, privacy spaces and deliberate sound management. Otherwise, the “collaboration-first” office becomes a room full of people trying to concentrate through somebody else’s brainstorm.

4. AI Is Redesigning the Office, Not Just the Desk

AI is also beginning to change what organisations need from their buildings.

CBRE found that 23% of organisations already see AI affecting their space planning, while another 30% expect it to have an impact within the next two years. Half expect increased use of flexible, reconfigurable space; 30% expect more demand for specialised environments, including AI labs and innovation spaces.

Julie Whelan, CBRE’s Head of Occupier Research, said:

“AI is a catalyst for office redesign.”

The implication is bigger than adding an AI lab to a floor plan. As AI takes on more routine and individual work, offices may need to make more room for the activity that remains stubbornly human: collaboration, decision-making, learning and solving difficult problems together.

That also raises the stakes for workplace technology. Smart room systems, collaboration platforms, employee devices, sound management and space analytics cannot be treated as separate projects if they are all shaping the same employee experience.
