Geo-Redundancy in UC: Why It Matters, and How SERVERware Helps MSPs Do It Right

Why MSPs need geo-redundancy for UC uptime and business continuity, with SERVERware, PBXware, automatic failover and multi-site clustering. Published on UC Toda

SERVERware geo-redundancy for MSPs

To ensure the highest reliability for their customers, Unified Communications (UC) service providers continually strive to maximize uptime by leveraging high-quality hardware and eliminating single points of failure. Despite these efforts, unforeseen events—such as major power outages or natural disasters—can still disrupt entire regions, causing significant service interruptions. This is where geo-redundancy comes in: By enabling Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to seamlessly switch their operations to alternate locations, geo-redundancy ensures uninterrupted service delivery, even when a primary site goes offline.

In a recent conversation with Nadia Cosic, SERVERware Product Owner at Bicom Systems, we explored the critical role of geo-redundancy and how MSPs can implement it using the SERVERware virtualization platform.

Geo-Redundancy, Uptime, and Business Continuity with SERVERware

SERVERware offers various user-friendly features and robust capabilities to enable quick recovery from disruptions with minimal impact. Here's a quick breakdown:

Automatic Failover: SERVERware’s Cluster Edition allows MSPs to increase redundancy by adding processing hosts that run Virtual Private Servers (VPSs) and PBXware instances.

"If one processing host fails, the automatic failover feature swiftly transfers all VPSs and PBXware instances to another host within the cluster, ensuring minimal downtime and seamless service for end users," Cosic explains.

Geo Redundancy: When an entire cluster goes offline, geo-redundancy steps in by switching all services to a geographically dispersed site. This transfer of VPSs and PBXware instances to a secondary location enables MSPs to maintain uninterrupted operations for their customers.

Scalability: SERVERware is designed to grow with service providers, whether they start small or expand rapidly.

"MSPs can easily scale by adding more processing hosts, PBXware instances, and VPSs, accommodating diverse customer needs and industry demands," Cosic says.

Multi-site Clustering: SERVERware supports multi-site clustering, enabling providers to create a "geo-redundancy ring" by replicating clusters across multiple locations.

"Some of our partners choose to use geo-redundant sites as production sites that serve different customer bases, which not only enhances redundancy but also optimizes ROI."

Backups: SERVERware’s backup functionality stores copies of VPSs locally, ensuring quick restoration if a VPS encounters issues. While the backup host does not run PBXware, it serves as a reliable safety net for restoring VPSs efficiently within the same cluster.

Investing in Geo-Redundancy: Why You Can't Afford Not to

For service providers aiming to ensure maximum uptime and meet their Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with their customers, geo-redundancy is indispensable.

"As we said, having geo redundancy in place effectively means that even in case of an unexpected disaster, the service provider and customers are entirely covered in terms of data, service, and overall business continuity," Cosic notes.

"Ultimately, the cost of implementing geo-redundancy is outweighed by the potential losses from service outages, making it a truly worthwhile investment," she concludes.
