Zoom Expands E2EE for Phone and Breakout Rooms

Why it matters: Zoom expands end-to-end encryption for Zoom Phone and Breakout Rooms, adding privacy controls for secure calls on UC Today.

Zoom E2EE for phone and breakout rooms

Zoom is expanding its end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature to both Zoom Phone and Breakout Rooms.

Customers will have a new option to update to E2EE during one-on-one Zoom Phone calls between users on the same Zoom account that occur via the Zoom client.

While in a call, users can select "more" and see an option which allows them to make the session an end-to-end encrypted phone call.

Zoom says that upgrading to an E2EE call takes a second and helps add an extra layer of privacy to a user's Zoom Phone calls.

Max Krohn, Head of Security Engineering at Zoom, said:

"Sending and sharing data is a sensitive matter, one that requires tailored innovation for adequate protection.

"That's why we've released key features — such as data routing control, in-product privacy notifications, end-to-end encryption, and more — to give you more insight and control over your information.

"And now, we're excited to expand our end-to-end encryption feature to both Zoom Phone and Breakout Rooms — two more ways you can use Zoom to achieve seamless and secure communication."

When the E2EE feature is enabled, the call will be encrypted using cryptographic keys only known to the participants' devices.

Additionally, users will have an option to verify E2EE status by providing a unique security code to each other.

For Breakout Rooms, it will be the same experience as a standard E2EE meeting, except each room gets its own unique encryption key.

The feature will be available for users who need an added layer of security for important, private conversations.

Since it launched in 2019, the Zoom Phone platform is available in 47 countries, with the Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) connectivity of Zoom Phone Provider Exchange offering customers a choice of global voice service providers in more than 70 countries.

Earlier this month, Zoom announced the latest milestone for Zoom Phone as the solution hit three million seats sold worldwide.

The company confirmed the platform reached the landmark number during Q1 of this year.
