Gmail client-side encryption

Google has revealed that client-side encryption for Gmail is now available for certain customers to try in its beta mode.

The beta is only available to Google Workspace customers with Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Education Standard customers until January 20, 2023.

The company states that customers will keep control over their encryption keys to ensure the service is secure.

A Google Workspace blog said: "We're expanding customer access to client-side encryption in Gmail on the web.

"Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Education Standard customers are eligible to apply for the beta until January 20th, 2023.

"Using client-side encryption in Gmail ensures sensitive data in the email body and attachments are indecipherable to Google servers.

"Customers retain control over encryption keys and the identity service to access those keys."

According to Google, its Workspace platform already uses the latest cryptographic standards to encrypt all data at rest and in transit between the company's facilities.

Client-side encryption will help strengthen the confidentiality of your data while addressing a range of data sovereignty and compliance needs.

Client-side encryption is currently available for Google Meet, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. It is also in the beta phase for Google Calendar.

Eligible Workspace customers can apply for the beta after completing a few steps to prepare their accounts.

Google states that the feature will be off by default and can be enabled at the domain, OU, and Group levels.

For end users to add client-side encryption to any message, they have to click the lock icon and select "additional encryption", compose the message and add attachments as usual.

Google has confirmed that it is accepting beta applications now and will grant the feature to customers in the coming weeks.

The beta is not available to users with personal Google accounts or customers who have Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals, Frontline, and Nonprofits, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers.
